Honours projects in the School of Mathematical Sciences

These web pages are intended to help you to choose an Honours project and supervisor. Here you will find a description of the staff members in the School of Mathematical Sciences who are likely to be available to supervise an Honours project in 2008, together with descriptions of their projects or areas of interest.

You might like to browse these pages to see what interests you. Once you have narrowed down your choice, it is important for you to discuss potential projects with the staff members concerned. There are sevaral reasons for this: (i) the project is a major investment of your time, and you should be well informed before undertaking it; (ii) it may be possible to tailor projects in a given area to your background knowledge and interests; (iii) the project may already be taken; (iv) the staff member needs to agree to take you on, and that you are suitably qualified for a particular project.

Project descriptions are categorised here as one of Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics or Statistics, although clearly some projects will overlap two or more of these broad areas.

Also bear in mind that your choice of project is not strictly limited to the lists given. If you have a particular project of your own in mind, or would like to spend time reading in a general area before focussing on a specific project, this can also be accommodated. In these cases you must discuss the possibilities with a member of staff whose interests match yours. These web pages should give you a good indication of the research interests of staff; in addition, the Honours coordinators can also suggest who you should approach.

Click here to see more in one of the following areas: Applied, Pure, Statistics.

We look forward to meeting you all. With best wishes for an enjoyable and successful year of Honours studies.

Alison Wolff
